What is ‘metabolic surgery’?
Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/metabolic-syndrome). The primary components are:
- A large waistline.
- High triglyceride (or you’re on lipid-lowering medications).
- Low HDL levels (or you’re on lipid-lowering medications).
- High blood pressure (or you’re on medicine to treat high blood pressure).
- High blood sugar (or you’re on medicine to treat high blood sugar).
When two or more of the above factors are present then the person is said to be suffering from ‘Metabolic Syndrome’. Obese people have a very high risk of developing metabolic syndrome. People suffering from metabolic syndrome have a significantly higher risk of developing heart disease and Diabetes.

How much weight will I lose after surgery?

How long will I be out of work?
If you have minimally invasive gastric sleeve or laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, you can expect to return to work in about 1-2 weeks. If you have a physically strenuous job, you may talk with your employer about working half-days or taking on some lighter work until you recover.
Will I need to have tests before surgery?
