Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is a procedure where a portion of the stomach is removed, creating a smaller, vertical stomach which may be about 10 times smaller than the original size. It is performed by minimally invasive technique, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and uses a laparoscope or a robot and specialized instruments to remove about 75-90% of the stomach, leaving a narrow gastric tube.
This procedure reduces the stomach’s size, restricting the amount of food it can hold. It also alters the production of a gut hormone called Ghrelin that regulates hunger, leading to a decreased appetite.
